The Lipid layer and how to maintain the proper function of it?

The lipid barrier refers to a protective layer of lipids (fats) that forms the outermost part of the skin's surface, primarily within the stratum corneum, or horny layer, of the epidermis. This barrier plays a crucial role in maintaining skin health and function by preventing excessive moisture loss from the skin and protecting against external irritants, pathogens, and environmental stressors.

To maintain the proper function of the lipid barrier:

  • Cleanse gently: Use mild, non-stripping cleansers that effectively remove dirt and impurities without compromising the skin's natural oils. Harsh cleansers can disrupt the lipid barrier, leading to moisture loss and dryness. At our store, you can purchase “Woman Essentials” Intimate Wash, which has the perfect pH balance and great for any type of skin.

  • Avoid excessive exposure to UV rays: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage the lipid barrier and accelerate moisture loss from the skin. Use sunscreen regularly and seek shade during peak sun hours to protect the skin from UV damage.

  • Do not oversaturate the skin with oils in their pure form: While oils can provide hydration and nourishment to the skin, excessive use or application of pure oils may disrupt the natural balance of the lipid barrier. Use oil-based products in moderation and opt for formulations that are well-balanced and suitable for your skin type.

  • Consume foods rich in Omega-3: Incorporate Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet by consuming foods such as fatty fish (e.g., salmon, mackerel, sardines), flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts. Omega-3 fatty acids help support healthy skin function, including maintaining the lipid barrier’s integrity.

  • Avoid excessive aggressive actions on the skin: Minimize activities that can damage or irritate the skin, such as excessive scrubbing, harsh exfoliation, or using abrasive skincare products. These actions can compromise the lipid barrier and lead to inflammation, sensitivity, and moisture loss. We highly recommend purchasing  “Dr. Melaxin” enzyme powder at AYA Sugaring store, which works perfectly as an exfoliator. It is pH balanced and made with non-chemical ingredients.
